My Number Card — Renewal

Your My Number Card has two separate expiry dates: the card itself is valid for 10 years (5 years for those under 18), while the embedded digital certificate expires every 5 years. Renewing the digital certificate requires a visit to the municipal office, but renewing the card itself can be done via online application (smartphone or PC), mail, or photo booth if you have the Application ID on your renewal notice.

Documents needed

Your current My Number Card
Residence card (for identity and residence status verification)
Renewal notice postcard from your municipality (bring it if you have it)
🗂️

Steps

1

About 2–3 months before expiry, your municipality will send a renewal notice postcard (you can still proceed without it)

2

Identify which renewal you need: digital certificate (every 5 years) or the card itself (every 10 years)

3

[Digital certificate renewal] Book an appointment at your municipal office, bring your My Number Card and ID → enter your PIN at the counter and it's done on the spot (about 5–10 minutes)

4

[Card renewal — if you have an Application ID] Use the Application ID or QR code on your renewal notice to apply by smartphone/PC, mail, or photo booth (no in-person visit required)

5

[Card renewal — no Application ID] Visit your municipal office to obtain an application form, then submit your application

6

[Card renewal — after applying] Your municipality will send a pickup notice in 1–2 months → collect your new card at the counter with identity verification

⚠️

Important notes

The digital certificate (5 years) and the card itself (10 years) have different expiry dates. The certificate usually needs renewing first

Digital certificate renewal is free

Full card renewal (new card issuance) is also free

If your residence card has already expired, you must renew that first before renewing your My Number Card

If you haven't updated your digital certificate after changing your address, you can do both at the same time

Renewal counters can be busy at some municipalities — booking an appointment in advance is strongly recommended

If your residence permit period is shorter than the card's standard validity (10 years), your My Number Card's expiry will be set to match your residence permit expiry. After renewing your residence permit, you'll need to visit your municipal office separately to extend the card's validity
