Residence Card Address Update

After moving, your new address must be recorded on the back of your Residence Card. Present your card when submitting your move-in notification (or change-of-address notification if moving within the same city) and it will be handled at the same counter.

Steps

When submitting your move-in notification (or change-of-address notification if moving within the same city), present your Residence Card at the counter at the same time

Your new address will be printed on the back of the card

Important notes

No separate visit is needed — this is processed together with your move-in notification

If you do not report a new address within 90 days of leaving the one on record, your status of residence can be revoked (Immigration Act art. 22-4(1)(ix), unless you have a legitimate reason). Making a false address notification carries up to 1 year of imprisonment or a fine of up to 200,000 yen (art. 71-2(i))

Do not forget to bring your Residence Card

The legal basis is Article 19-9(1) of the Immigration Control Act. If you have just arrived in Japan, report your address at your municipal office within 14 days of deciding where you live
