My Number Card — PIN Reset

If you forget your PIN or lock the card by entering it wrongly too many times, you can reset it at the counter of the municipality where you are registered. If you still know either the signature PIN or the user-authentication PIN, you can also reset the other one at a convenience store kiosk after booking through a dedicated app. Both routes are free.

🗂️

Steps

1

Check whether you remember either your digital signature PIN (alphanumeric, 6–16 characters) or your user authentication PIN (4-digit numeric)

2

[If you remember one PIN] Install the 'JPKI暗証番号リセット' (JPKI PIN Reset) app on your smartphone (free)

3

[Kiosk route] Open the app, hold your My Number card to the phone, and book the reset for the PIN you want to initialise (booking is available around the clock in principle)

4

[Kiosk route] Within 24 hours of booking, go to a participating kiosk terminal, choose 'Government services' then 'Reset My Number card password', insert the card and reset it. To prove who you are, you enter the other PIN - the 4-digit user-authentication PIN if you are resetting the signature PIN, and the 6-16 character signature PIN if it is the other way round. Kiosk terminals handle this between 6:30 and 23:00

5

[If you've forgotten both PINs] Visit your municipal office (some municipalities require an appointment)

6

[At the municipal office] Present your My Number Card and identity documents

7

[At the municipal office] After identity verification, set new PINs at the terminal

8

Your card is unlocked and ready to use with the new PIN

⚠️

Important notes

There are four PINs: (1) the signature certificate PIN (6-16 characters, and it must mix digits with capital letters), (2) the user-authentication certificate PIN (4 digits), (3) the resident register PIN (4 digits), and (4) the card-reading assistance PIN (4 digits). Number 1 locks after 5 consecutive wrong entries and number 2 after 3

Kiosk resets are available at 7-Eleven, Lawson, FamilyMart, Ministop, Aeon and similar chains, and which PIN a given store can reset varies (some handle only the signature PIN). For the resident-register or card-reading assistance PINs, or if you have forgotten both certificate PINs, go to your municipal office. The service is unavailable if the certificates on your card have expired

Same-day processing is available (may take up to several tens of minutes depending on the municipality and how busy it is)

Both the counter and the kiosk route are free. Enquiries about the service go to the freephone line 0120-95-0178 (9:30 to 20:00 every day including weekends and holidays, closed December 29 to January 3)
