Overseas Move-Out Notification

Before leaving Japan, notify your local city or ward office that you are moving abroad. After submitting, your National Health Insurance and National Pension obligations end. Note that resident tax (juminzei) is assessed based on your address as of January 1st — any amount already assessed remains payable even after you leave.

Documents needed

Steps

1

Visit your local city / ward office between 14 days before your departure date and the day of departure itself

2

Pick up the overseas move-out form and fill in the required information (destination country, planned departure date, etc.)

3

Submit with your ID document and Residence Card

4

If you have a My Number Card, confirm whether to return it or retain it for overseas use (renewal procedures may still be required)

Important notes

•

From the date your notification is submitted, your residence registration is cancelled. This ends your National Health Insurance and National Pension obligations. However, resident tax (juminzei) is assessed based on your address as of January 1st each year — any tax already assessed for the current year remains payable after departure. Settle any outstanding balance before leaving, or appoint a tax agent

•

If you return to Japan and live here again, you will need to re-register your address (move-in notification)

•

You can retain your My Number Card after moving overseas, but you must update the address on record. If not needed, you can return it at the counter
