Q. How do I apply for a My Number Card?
Apply from a phone, computer, by post, or at a photo booth, using the QR code or application ID on your individual number notification or application form. Municipalities send the pickup notice roughly a month after the application, barring problems with the paperwork, though this varies by municipality. You normally collect the card in person at the municipal office.
Q. Can foreigners living in Japan get a My Number Card?
Yes. Mid-to-long-term residents and special permanent residents, who are entered on the residence register, can apply for and collect a card at the municipality where they are registered. Anyone whose period of stay is three months or less, or who holds Temporary Visitor, Diplomat or Official status, is not a mid-to-long-term resident, is not entered on the register, and so is not assigned a My Number or able to apply.
Q. How long is a My Number Card valid?
The card runs to the tenth birthday after issue, or the fifth for those under 18, and the electronic certificate to the fifth birthday after issue regardless of age. Among foreign residents, permanent residents, Highly Skilled Professional (ii) holders and special permanent residents are treated the same as Japanese nationals. For other mid-to-long-term residents the validity follows their status and period of stay, and can be changed on application.
