Residence Status Application for Foreign-Born Child

A child born in Japan to foreign-national parents (who does not acquire Japanese nationality) and who plans to remain in Japan beyond 60 days after birth must apply for permission to acquire a status of residence within 30 days of birth. Complete birth registration first, then apply at the Immigration Services Agency promptly.

Documents needed

✓Application for Permission to Acquire Status of Residence (download from Immigration Services Agency website)
✓Proof of birth (Birth Registration acceptance certificate, or resident record copy)
✓Both parents' Residence Cards (originals)
✓Both parents' passports (originals)
✓Passport-style photo of applicant (4cm × 3cm) — required only for age 16+; not needed for newborns

Steps

Submit the birth registration at your municipal office to complete resident registration (within 14 days of birth)

Download the 'Application for Permission to Acquire Status of Residence' from the Immigration Services Agency website and fill it in

Within 30 days of birth (target), visit the Immigration Services Agency office or branch with jurisdiction over your address and submit the application in person (postal submission may be available). If you plan to stay beyond 60 days, applying within 30 days is required.

Once approved, the child receives a Residence Card (children under 16 are not required to carry it)

Important notes

•

If you plan to stay in Japan beyond 60 days, you must apply within 30 days of birth. If you plan to leave Japan within 60 days, no application is needed — but apply immediately if plans change

•

The child's visa type typically matches the parent's — or is granted as 'Family Stay' (家族滞在). Example: if the parent holds 'Engineer / Humanities / International Business,' the child receives 'Family Stay'

•

If a parent is a Permanent Resident, the child may also apply for Permanent Resident status (subject to review)

•

If the child acquires Japanese nationality (when one parent is Japanese), no status of residence application is needed

•

Children of Special Permanent Residents: apply for a Special Permanent Resident Certificate at the municipal office within 60 days — no immigration office visit required
