This application changes your current status of residence to a different category. Required documents vary depending on the target status. Standard processing time is 1–2 months; the fee is ¥6,000 at the counter (¥5,500 online).

Documents needed

Change of Status of Residence Application form (download from Immigration Services Agency website)
Photo (4cm high × 3cm wide), 1 print — taken from the front within 6 months, no hat, no background. Not required if you are under 1 year old on the date the residence card is issued (before June 13, 2026 the exemption applied to those under 16)
Passport (present at counter)

Steps

Download the application form for your target status of residence from the Immigration Services Agency website and fill it in

Prepare all documents required for your target status of residence (see the 'Required Documents' section above)

Submit all documents in person at your jurisdictional immigration office counter (postal submission may be available in some cases depending on the status type and circumstances — check the Immigration Services Agency website in advance)

Wait for the result (standard processing time: 1–2 months)

When the approval notice arrives, visit the Immigration Bureau by the specified date to collect your new residence card (fee paid by revenue stamp: 6,000 yen at the counter, 5,500 yen online)

Important notes

You may continue residing in Japan under your current status during the review period. However, you must apply before your residence period expires

Apply as soon as the reason for the change arises. If you stop your current activities (e.g., studying or working) without applying promptly, your residence status may be revoked

All documents written in a foreign language must be accompanied by a Japanese translation

Certificates issued in Japan must generally be submitted within 3 months of their issue date
