Mail Forwarding Request

This forwards mail addressed to your old home to the new one. You can file it free of charge at a post office counter, by dropping the form in a postbox, or through e-Tenkyo on the website or the Japan Post app. Forwarding runs for one year from the date you file.

Steps

To file through e-Tenkyo on the website or app, you need to log in with a Yu ID that has already been identity-verified (available 24 hours, about 5 minutes)

Enter your old and new addresses and name. Registration takes 3 to 7 business days after you file, so submit it early

You can also fill in the form at a post office counter (they verify the person filing plus one of the people moving). Another route is to attach a copy of your ID to the completed form and drop it in a postbox with no stamp

Important notes

•

Forwarding lasts one year from the date you file - not from the date you asked forwarding to start. After that, mail goes back to the sender, so file again if you still need it

•

Accepted identification includes a driving licence, health insurance qualification certificate, driving history certificate, residence card, My Number card, or special permanent resident certificate

•

After accepting the form, Japan Post may confirm the move - by visiting, asking a co-resident, or sending a confirmation letter to the old address (no letter is sent if the counter already verified you and the old address details)
