Re-Entry Permit Check

If you are leaving Japan temporarily while keeping your residency status, either a 'deemed re-entry permit' or a standard 're-entry permit' applies depending on your planned absence. Failing to return within the permitted period will result in your residency status being cancelled.

Documents needed

Residence Card (do NOT return this)
Passport (check expiry date)
Re-entry permit application form (only if applying for a re-entry permit)
🗂️

Steps

1

If staying abroad for 1 year or less: no special procedure needed. At the airport, simply check the 'deemed re-entry permit' box on your departure card

2

If staying abroad for more than 1 year: obtain a re-entry permit from the immigration office before departure. Note that a re-entry permit does not extend your residence period — if your residence period expires before your planned return, you must return before that date or check whether renewal is possible before departing

3

If you obtained a re-entry permit, return to Japan before the permit expires (maximum 5 years)

⚠️

Important notes

Deemed re-entry permit: automatically applied at the airport on departure. Valid for 1 year from the departure date (or until your residence period expires, whichever comes first). If you do not return in time, your residency status is cancelled

Re-entry permit: requires advance application at the immigration office (fee: counter ¥4,000 single / ¥7,000 multiple; online ¥3,500 single / ¥6,500 multiple). Valid for up to 5 years within your current residence period

Keep your Residence Card — do not surrender it at the airport. You will need to present it on return. Returning it means giving up your residency status

Permanent residents (Eijusha): leaving without a re-entry permit will result in cancellation of permanent residency. Always confirm deemed or standard re-entry permit status before departure
