Steps

1

Check your residence card expiry date and start preparing 3 months before it expires

2

Ask your sponsor (spouse or parent) to obtain documents showing their ability to support you financially — employment and tax certificates if working or running a business, or bank balance/scholarship certificates if not

3

Prepare documents proving your family relationship (marriage certificate, birth certificate, etc.). Documents in a foreign language must be accompanied by a Japanese translation

4

Download the application form from the ISA website and fill it in

5

Prepare a passport-style photo (4cm × 3cm, white background, taken within 6 months before application)

6

Bring all documents to your regional immigration office to submit the application (online application also available)

7

Wait for the result (standard processing time: 2 weeks – 1 month). Once approved, pay the ¥6,000 revenue stamp fee (counter) or ¥5,500 (online application) and collect your new residence card

⚠️

Important notes

You can apply up to 3 months before expiry. If you apply before the expiry date, you may continue living in Japan during the review period (tokureikikan — valid until the disposition date or 2 months after the expiry date, whichever comes first)

Applying after the expiry date may result in an overstay violation — start the process early

The fee (¥6,000 revenue stamp for counter applications, or ¥5,500 for online) is paid after approval, not at the time of application

Documents written in a foreign language must be accompanied by a Japanese translation, including the translator's name and contact information

You may be asked to submit a household residence certificate (juminhyo) — follow the instructions given at the immigration counter

Online application requires prior user registration on the ISA online system
