Childcare Leave Benefit (育児休業給付金)

A government benefit for company employees enrolled in employment insurance who take childcare leave (civil servants should check their mutual aid association or workplace rules). You receive 67% of your pre-leave salary for the first 6 months, then 50%. From April 2025, couples who both take leave can receive 80% for the first 28 days. Your company handles most of the paperwork.

Payroll records and attendance ledger (prepared by company)
Employment Insurance Card (usually held by the company)
🗂️

Steps

1

At least 1 month before the expected birth date, notify your company's HR department that you plan to take childcare leave

2

After leave begins, your company submits the benefit eligibility confirmation and initial payment application to Hello Work (deadline: by the last day of the month that falls 4 months after leave starts — earlier is better)

3

Every 2 months, your company files a payment application with Hello Work, and the benefit is deposited into your account

4

When leave ends, your company notifies Hello Work of the termination

⚠️

Important notes

Benefit amounts: 67% of pre-leave salary for the first 180 days (6 months), then 50%

April 2025 reform: If both parents take leave, each can receive up to 80% for the first 28 days (within the first year of the child's life)

Eligibility: (1) enrolled in employment insurance, and (2) at least 12 months of employment insurance coverage in the 2 years before leave starts

Social insurance premiums (health insurance + employee pension) are waived during childcare leave — your net pay may stay similar to the benefit amount

Leave can be taken until the child turns 1. If daycare cannot be secured, leave can be extended up to age 2

Paternity leave (産後パパ育休): fathers can take up to 4 weeks within 8 weeks of birth, separately from regular childcare leave
