Open a Bank Account

Opening a bank account is essential for life in Japan. Eligibility conditions vary by bank and may be affected by your remaining residence period, months since arrival, nationality, and other factors. After registering your address, check each bank's official website for their current requirements before applying.

Steps

1

Apply after completing your move-in registration — having an active address registration improves approval chances

2

Check each bank's official website for eligibility requirements (remaining residence period, months since arrival, nationality, FATCA, etc.) before applying

3

Verify your identity using your Residence Card and any additional documents required by the bank — your cash card will be mailed after approval

⚠️

Important notes

Applying after address registration makes the approval process smoother. Banks may reject applications if you arrived less than 6 months ago, your residence period is short, or due to other eligibility conditions

Japan Post Bank (Yucho) has a relatively established track record for foreign residents — worth considering, but verify current conditions on their official site

Having a bank account before starting a job makes salary transfers and utility bill payments much easier
