Q. How many days do I have to submit the move-out and move-in notifications?
The move-out notification is filed before you move — article 24 of the Basic Resident Registration Act requires it in advance. The move-in notification is due within 14 days of starting to live at the new address (article 22), and a change-of-address notification for a move within the same municipality is likewise due within 14 days (article 23). All are handled at the municipal office.
Q. Do foreigners need to update their Residence Card address when moving?
Yes. Foreigners can update the address on their Residence Card at the same time as the move-in notification. The deadline is 14 days from the moving date. If you have a My Number Card, the address on that must also be updated.
Q. If I move within the same city, do I still need to submit a notification?
Yes, but it's called a tenkyo-todoke (change of address within the same ward/city) rather than move-out/move-in notifications. Visit the same city office within 14 days of moving.
