Frequently Asked Questions
Q. How many days do I have to submit the move-out and move-in notifications?
The move-out notification (tenshutsu-todoke) must be submitted within 14 days before or after moving. The move-in notification (tennyu-todoke) must be submitted within 14 days of moving in, at the new city or ward office.
Q. Do foreigners need to update their Residence Card address when moving?
Yes. Foreigners can update the address on their Residence Card at the same time as the move-in notification. The deadline is 14 days from the moving date. If you have a My Number Card, the address on that must also be updated.
Q. If I move within the same city, do I still need to submit a notification?
Yes, but it's called a tenkyo-todoke (change of address within the same ward/city) rather than move-out/move-in notifications. Visit the same city office within 14 days of moving.
