You must submit the birth registration (shussei-todoke) within 14 days of the birth (including the birth date) at a city or ward office. If the birth occurred outside Japan, the deadline is 3 months.
Q. How much is the childbirth lump-sum allowance?
The childbirth lump-sum allowance (Shussan Ikuji Ichiji-kin) is ¥500,000 (or ¥488,000 if the facility is not enrolled in the obstetric compensation system), paid through your health insurance. You must be enrolled in health insurance to receive it.
Q. What about the residence status for a child born to foreign parents?
A child born to foreign parents in Japan must apply for residence status within 60 days of birth. If the child will continue to stay after 60 days, they need to obtain a visa such as Dependent (Kazoku Taizai) status.
